Herpes on the lips that is caused by two viruses, herpes simplex virus, type 1 or herpes-1, and herpes simplex virus, type 2 or herpes-2. * Sores in the mouth caused as a result of oral herpes spread to the chin and neck area as well. There is swelling of the lymph nodes in the neck, which can make swallowing food difficult.

* There is a swelling of the gums, which makes chewing difficult.
